On January 6, 1980, in Palermo in Via della Libertà, as soon as he got into the car with his wife, two children and his mother-in-law to go to mass, a killer approached his window and killed Piersanti Mattarella with a gunshot. In the place where the murder took place, in Via della Libertà between the number 135 and 137, a plaque was placed in his memory. Initially the infamous act was considered a terrorist attack, as soon after the crime, claims came from a self-styled neo-fascist group. Despite the disorientation of the moment, however, the crime appeared anomalous in its modalities, bringing the writer Leonardo Sciascia to the same day to allude to "comfortable hypotheses" that could have traced the murder back to the Sicilian mafia. In this film, Aurelio Grimaldi retraces those tragic days of the lead years with a careful and sensitive eye.
